What license is needed to rent a motorcycle or car in Thailand in 2026?

For renting transport in Thailand in 2026, the situation with licenses remains ambiguous. Since May 1, 2020, Thailand has ratified the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, which theoretically allows driving a car or motorcycle with a national Russian license. However, in practice, many police officers and some rental agencies still require an International Driving Permit (IDP) in the form of a booklet. Therefore, to avoid problems, we strongly recommend obtaining an IDP before your trip in addition to your regular license.

As for local Thai licenses, that is a myth — there is no official requirement for tourists to obtain them. To drive a motorcycle, you must have category 'A' open, although this is rarely checked when renting, but the police can fine you for not having it.
