To rent a car in Thailand in 2026, you will need a national driving license, but in practice, police and rental companies often require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Although Thailand has ratified the Vienna Convention, and theoretically you can drive with a national license, tourist reviews are contradictory: some drive without issues, while others face problems. We strongly recommend obtaining an IDP in advance (via 'Gosuslugi', without certificates or exams) in addition to your Russian license.
