It is worth going to Phu Quoc from Hanoi by train only if you are a big fan of railways, want to see Vietnam from the window, and have a lot of time. This is not the most practical way for an ordinary tourist in a hurry for a beach holiday.

Here is what this route looks like and its pros/cons:

  • Route: First, an overnight train from Hanoi (Ga Hanoi station) to Ho Chi Minh City (Ga Saigon station). The journey takes 30-35 hours. The cost is from 800,000 VND for a sleeper to 1,500,000 VND for a compartment. Then from Ho Chi Minh City, you need to fly to Phu Quoc (1 hour, from 700,000 VND).
  • Pros: A unique experience of traveling across the entire country, the opportunity to save on one night in a hotel (if traveling on an overnight train), relatively comfortable conditions in a compartment.
  • Cons: Very long (more than 1.5 days just on the train), the total cost (train + flight) is often comparable or even higher than a direct flight, the need to book and plan two different types of transport.

If you still decide on the train, be sure to read our detailed guide on traveling by train in Vietnam. It covers everything about carriage classes, ticket purchases, and nuances.

Conclusion: For 99% of tourists, it is more optimal and faster to choose a direct flight (2 hours) or a flight via Ho Chi Minh City. The train is a choice for an adventurous journey, not for a quick start to a vacation.
