Is it worth going to Phu Quoc from Da Nang by bus and ferry?

It is worth going to Phu Quoc from Da Nang by bus and ferry only if you are an experienced backpacker, have a lot of time (at least two days), and want to experience "deep" Vietnam. For most tourists, especially families or those who value comfort, this option is not recommended.
Here are the main reasons why the overland route loses to flying:
- Colossal time costs: The journey will take from 24 to 30+ hours compared to 2 hours by plane. You will have: bus Da Nang-Ho Chi Minh City (~20 hours), bus Ho Chi Minh City-Rach Gia (~6-7 hours), ferry Rach Gia-Phu Quoc (~2.5 hours), plus waiting times and transfers.
- Low comfort: Long trips in sleeper buses (seats are often short), several transfers with luggage, possible overnight stays in Ho Chi Minh City or Rach Gia.
- Insignificant savings: The cost of the overland route (from ~1,000,000 VND + accommodation and food expenses) is often comparable to or even exceeds the price of a plane ticket purchased in advance without luggage (from 1,200,000 VND).
Important: Ferries to Phu Quoc from ports in Rach Gia or Ha Tien mainly run in the first half of the day. If you miss the last ferry, you will face a forced overnight stay in a provincial town.
This method makes sense only if you specifically want to see the road from central Vietnam to the south, possibly with a stop in Ho Chi Minh City. In all other cases, choose a plane β it will save you time, nerves, and energy for relaxing on the beautiful beaches of Phu Quoc.
