Yes, sometimes replacing the SIM card is necessary to activate VoWiFi, and this is one of the hidden pitfalls of the technology. We encountered this issue with the operator Megafon: VoWiFi did not work until we replaced the old SIM card with a new one.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Card age. If your SIM card is more than 10 years old, there is a chance that it does not support modern technologies, such as VoLTE and VoWiFi. As explained in the customer service department, operators now release new generations of SIM cards with updated software.
  • Replacement process. You can replace the SIM card with a new one from the same operator while keeping your number at any branded communication store. Usually, this service is free or costs a symbolic amount.
  • Main risk β€” bank bindings. This is the most important point! Many banks perceive changing a SIM card (even while keeping the number) as suspicious activity. They may block online banking, require confirmation via a call to the call center, or even a personal visit to a branch to unblock it. Imagine this happening when you are already abroad!

Strong recommendation: If you plan to use VoWiFi while traveling, test the function at home. If it does not activate, and you suspect the issue is with the SIM card, replace it before departure, while in Russia. This will give you time to resolve any possible issues with banks and other services linked to your phone number.

In addition to replacing the SIM, you may also need to request VoWiFi activation from the operator through support. We have described all these steps in detail in our guide article: VoWiFi for travelers: how to call from abroad and save.
