Getting to the Perfume Pagoda from Hanoi on your own is difficult and time-consuming. The most realistic option for a tourist is to take a taxi to the pier and hire a boat there. However, it is easier and often more cost-effective to purchase an organized tour.

The Perfume Pagoda (Huong Pagoda) is located 60 kilometers southwest of Hanoi. The journey consists of several stages:

  1. To the pier (My Duc town): It is practically impossible for a tourist to get there by public transport—it will take a lot of time and effort. The best option is to order a taxi or a car with a driver. The trip will take about 2-3 hours one way.
  2. From the pier to the temple complex: You cannot drive directly to the pagoda. You need to transfer to a rowboat, which sails along the river for about 40 minutes. At the pier, you need to hire the entire boat (designed for 6 people) or find fellow travelers to share the cost.
  3. From the entrance of the complex to the main temple: After disembarking, you need to walk through the market to the foot of the mountain, and then climb to the cave temple on foot (about an hour) or by cable car (a few minutes).

Practical advice: Considering the complexity of logistics, travel time (almost a whole day), and the need to separately pay for the taxi, boat, entrance, and cable car, an organized tour often turns out to be a more convenient and predictable option. You will avoid problems with finding transportation and the language barrier.

If you still decide to go on your own, here are approximate expenses (in addition to the taxi): boat from the pier — 120,000 dong, temple entrance — 85,000 dong, round-trip cable car — 220,000 dong.
