Trekking in Sapa is hiking along scenic mountain trails to ethnic villages of local tribes (Hmong, Zao, Tay), through rice terraces, valleys, and waterfalls. This is the main reason tourists come to Sapa and the most authentic way to experience the beauty of northern Vietnam.
Main and most popular trekking destinations:
- Muong Hoa Valley: The hallmark of Sapa! The route passes through emerald rice terraces (especially beautiful from May to October) and the villages of Lao Chai (Hmong people) and Ta Van (Zai people). Standard one-day route.
- Ta Phin Village: Route to the village where Red Zao and Black Hmong live. Along the way, you can see a cave. Takes about 4-6 hours.
- Multi-day tours with overnight stays: For example, 2-3 days in Muong Hoa Valley with overnight stays in Ta Van or Ban Ho villages. Stay in homestays—local homes, offering full immersion in daily life.
- Climbing Fansipan: A separate, challenging trekking for 1-2 days with a guide.
How to organize trekking?
- With a guide/tour: The most popular way. Guides (often local women from tribes) are easy to find in Sapa on the street or through the hotel. Cost of a group tour per day—from $15-20 per person (including lunch).
- Independently: Possible on some routes (e.g., to Muong Hoa Valley), but you need to pay an entrance fee (150,000 dong) and be prepared that trails may be muddy, and without a guide, you'll learn less about the culture. For Fansipan and remote routes, a guide is mandatory.
