The Ancient Rock Field in Sapa (Sapa Ancient Rock Field) is a unique open-air archaeological site where approximately 200 large boulders, about 2000 years old, are carved with ancient petroglyphs.

The site was discovered in 1925 by the Franco-Russian archaeologist V.V. Golubev. The stones are scattered across the Muong Hoa Valley, and on them, you can see mysterious images: geometric lines, figures of people, animals, and symbols resembling hieroglyphs. Their exact purpose and meaning have not yet been fully deciphered, adding a mystical atmosphere to the place.

Free museum on the field's territory

Why this place is interesting:

  • Ancient history: Touching the heritage of a civilization that existed here two millennia ago.
  • Mystery: The enigma of the origin and meaning of the drawings stimulates the imagination.
  • Scenic location: The stones lie among the rice fields and mountains of the Muong Hoa Valley, which is very beautiful in itself.
  • Accessibility: Visiting the field and museum is free (except for the entrance fee to the valley during trekking).
Sad reality: Unfortunately, the petroglyphs are gradually deteriorating. UNESCO has not placed the site under protection, and many ancient drawings have been painted over with modern graffiti by tourists. This is a place worth seeing while it is still preserved.

Before descending to the field, you can visit a small museum with information and photographs. Exploring the stones themselves involves walking along paths among the fields. Do not try to find and see all 200 stones; examine a few of the nearest ones.
