You can climb Mount Fansipan (3143 m) on your own in two ways: by hiking with a guide (mandatory!) or by cable car (independently and easily). The classic hike without accompaniment is prohibited and dangerous.

Here are all the options:

  1. By Sun World Fansipan Legend cable car (the easiest and fastest way):
    • You come to the funicular station at Sun Plaza shopping center in the center of Sapa.
    • Buy a ticket: funicular (200,000 VND round trip) + cable car (800,000 VND round trip). Total about 1,000,000 VND.
    • The funicular takes you to the lower cable car station, and from there a cabin lifts you to the summit in 20 minutes. The entire one-way journey takes about 30 minutes.
    • At the top, you'll find an entertainment complex with temples, gardens, and viewing platforms.
  2. Hiking trek with a guide (for 1-2 days):
    • On your own, without a guide, climbing is prohibited! The route is difficult, easy to get lost, and requires a guide.
    • You can find a guide in Sapa: they may approach you on the street or through a travel agency/hotel. The cost of a group tour starts from $50 per person for a one-day hike (which is very physically challenging) or from $80-100 for a two-day hike with overnight camping.
    • The route goes through jungles and requires good physical fitness. It's a real adventure, but be prepared for exertion.
  3. Combined option (rare): Climb on foot with a guide, and descend by cable car (need to discuss in advance with the guide and buy a one-way ticket).

Important for the cable car: Arrive at opening time (from 7:30) to avoid long queues, especially on weekends and holidays. At the summit, it can be cold and windy even in summer β€” bring warm clothing.
