A couple of years ago, there was no public transport here, and the budget for taxis or rentals could hit your wallet hard. Now the situation has changed dramatically, and having ridden these buses ourselves, we want to share the good news.

💰 Main answer: how much does it cost?

The short and most pleasant answer: on the main routes, the ride is absolutely free. Yes, you heard that right. This is not a one-day promotion, but the current policy of VinBus, which has launched a network of electric buses on the island.

When we first saw these modern air-conditioned buses, we couldn't believe that the ride was free. But it's true, and it's a real find for budget travelers.

🚌 Which routes can you ride for free?

Free rides are available on three key routes that connect the airport, main beaches, and tourist areas. Other routes (with numbers V1, V2.1, etc.) mainly operate in the Grand World area in the north of the island and may be paid, but tourists use them less often.

Here are the three "golden" free routes:

• Bus No. 17 – the main tourist artery

  • ✔ Cost: Free.
  • 🕐 Frequency: 24/7 every 15-30 minutes. Night services available.

  The most important route. It goes directly from Phu Quoc Airport along the entire Long Beach through the center of Duong Dong and to the Grand World complex. You can use it to reach most hotels in the main tourist area.

• Bus No. 19 – for southern Long Beach

  • ✔ Cost: Free.
  • 🕐 Note: Runs less frequently, on a schedule. Only a few trips per day.

  Also passes through the airport, but starts from hotels in the southern part of Long Beach (e.g., from InterContinental). Useful if you are staying in this part of the island.

• Bus No. 20 – from the ferry pier

  • ✔ Cost: Free.
  • 🕐 Note: Runs on a schedule, not along the beach area.

  Connects the main pier, where ferries from the mainland arrive, with the center of Duong Dong and the north of the island. Ideal if you are arriving on Phu Quoc by sea.

🛷 How to use the buses: important nuances

Although the ride is free, there are a few things to know to avoid awkward situations:

• No payment required. Just get on the bus. No cards or cash needed.
• Find the stop. Not all stops look like a shelter. Sometimes it's just a blue sign on a pole. At the airport, the stop is a few minutes' walk from the terminal exit – go right. We have a separate video showing how to find it.
• Flag it down. Buses don't automatically stop at every stop. When you see a bus approaching, wave your hand like you would for a taxi.
• Use the app. Download the official VinBus app. It shows real-time bus movement on a map, exact schedule, and helps plan your route. This is the most reliable source of information.

💡 What else to know about transport on the island

Free buses are great, but they don't cover 100% of the island. Their routes run along the main roads.

So for trips to remote areas, wild beaches, or for more comfort, you will likely need:

• Taxi or motorbike: For short trips from the stop to the hotel or for independent excursions. Taxi prices on Phu Quoc are higher than on mainland Vietnam.
• Vehicle rental: If you plan to actively explore the island, renting a motorbike (from 150,000 VND/day) or a car will be convenient.
