In the Muong Hoa Valley, there are several ethnic villages, each with its own culture and way of life. Visiting these villages is a key part of any trekking in the valley. Here are the main ones, in order of distance from Sapa:

  • Cat Cat: The closest and most touristy village of the Hmong people. There are many souvenir shops and a beautiful waterfall. A great option for a short walk.
  • Y Linh Ho: A small Hmong village, less touristy than Cat Cat. Longer trekking routes often start from here.
  • Lao Chai: Another Hmong village, known for its picturesque rice terraces right by the river. A very photogenic place.
  • Ta Van: A village of the Giay people. A popular place for overnight stays in homestays (family guesthouses). Here, you can already feel a different culture and architecture.
  • Giang Ta Chai: A village of the Red Dao people, located higher in the mountains. The trail here is more challenging, but the views are stunning.
  • Ban Ho: The most remote village in the valley (about 25 km from Sapa), also inhabited by the Dao people. The route here often includes a visit to hot springs.

Traveling from village to village, you can notice differences in traditional costumes, language, and way of life among different ethnic groups. In many villages, there is an opportunity to stay overnight in a simple but cozy homestay, have dinner with a local family, and better understand their culture.
