For exploring Hue, it is optimal to allocate 2-3 full days. This time is enough to leisurely get acquainted with the main attractions, feel the atmosphere of the city, and not get tired.

Approximate plan for 2-3 days:

  • Day 1 (Historical core): Dedicate it to the Imperial Citadel (Imperial City). A leisurely exploration of this grand UNESCO complex with palaces, temples, and gardens will take 2-3 hours. After lunch, you can stroll along the Perfume River embankment, see the Trang Tien Bridge, and in the evening go for dinner at a local restaurant or to the pedestrian street.
  • Day 2 (Tombs and surroundings): Go to see the emperors' tombs. The most impressive ones are Khai Dinh, Tu Duc, and Minh Mang. They are located 7-20 km from the center, so it is most convenient to rent a motorbike, take a taxi, or join a tour to visit them. Exploring 2-3 tombs will take a whole day.
  • Day 3 (Relaxation and details, or departure): On the third day, you can leisurely visit Thien Mu Pagoda, go to Tuan An Beach (12 km), relax at Kobi Onsen hot springs, or simply walk around the city, visit museums, the Thuy Xuan incense village, or the local Cho Cong market for cheap fruits.

If you have only 1 day, you will have to choose: either focus on the Citadel and one nearby tomb (for example, Khai Dinh), or take an intensive sightseeing tour. But in this case, you will only get a superficial impression.

Hue is a place where it's worth slowing down to feel its special, calm, and authentic spirit of the former capital. Therefore, 2-3 days is the ideal duration.
