Tipping, or "baksheesh," is an important part of the service culture in Egypt and often the main income for local staff. It should be given for services actually rendered, not for imposed ones.

Here are approximate tipping amounts in Egypt:

  • Porter, doorman, baggage assistant: 5-10 Egyptian pounds (EGP) or equivalent in small foreign currency.
  • Hotel maid (for room cleaning): 20-30 EGP (about 1 dollar) per day, can be left at the end of the stay.
  • Bartender or waiter under the "all-inclusive" system: A one-time tip of 1-2 dollars at the beginning of the vacation can significantly improve the quality of service.
  • In a restaurant or cafe: It is customary to leave 5-10% of the bill if the service satisfied you.
  • Taxi driver: You can round up the amount or add 5-10% if the trip was by meter. However, in resort areas, prices are usually inflated and negotiable, so additional tips are not required.

Do not give money to beggars or those who impose unwanted services (e.g., escort you without permission). Refuse firmly but politely. Tips are a gratitude, not an obligation.

If you don't have small change, you can give a dollar or euro. The main thing is to do it with a smile and gratitude. Remember that for many locals, this is a significant addition to a very modest salary.
