The success of a trip to Hoi An is 90% dependent on proper planning. Here are proven tips that will drastically improve your experience and help avoid disappointments.

  1. Choose the right time of year. The best months are March to August: dry, sunny, calm sea. Try to avoid October-November — this is the peak of the rainy season and typhoons with a high risk of floods.
  2. Solve the "center vs beach" dilemma when choosing accommodation.
    • If you want to be in the thick of things and walk around the Old Town in the evenings — look for a hotel or guesthouse in the Old Town itself or within a 10-15 minute walk from it.
    • If you want to combine culture and comfortable beach relaxation — stay in the An Bang or Cua Dai beach areas and rent a motorbike (about 150,000 dong/day) or use taxis (60,000 - 80,000 dong one way) for trips to the center. A detailed breakdown of all areas is in our guide to Hoi An's districts and beaches.
  3. Properly prioritize by time of day.
    • Morning (before 11:00) — the best time for photos and quiet walks through the almost empty streets of the Old Town.
    • Afternoon — visiting museums and old houses with a single ticket, shopping in tailor shops, a trip to the beach.
    • Evening (by 18:00) — reserve a table at your favorite restaurant on the waterfront. After 19:00, this becomes very difficult. After dinner, enjoy the view of the lit lanterns.
  4. Buy a single entrance ticket (120,000 dong). It is mandatory for visiting the main attractions (old houses, museums, assembly halls) and allows you to choose 5 objects out of 25. Without it, you won't get inside. All details are in the guide "What to see in Hoi An".
  5. Set aside separate time for the beach. Don't try to combine it with city sightseeing in one day. It's better to dedicate half a day or a full day to the beach for a proper rest.

Life hack: For authentic and inexpensive food, head to local food courts, for example, at the Cho Ban Le market. Prices and atmosphere there will be much more Vietnamese than in tourist restaurants on the waterfront.
