It's best to arrive in the afternoon to catch both daylight and evening time. Each time of day in Hoi An Old Town has its advantages:

  • During the day (especially before 3-4 PM) you can calmly and in detail examine the architecture of ancient buildings, visit museums and temples with a single ticket (they are open until 6 PM), and take beautiful photos without crowds. But it can be very hot.
  • In the evening (after 6 PM, and especially after sunset) the magic turns on: thousands of silk lanterns are lit, the streets (especially Nguyen Thα»‹ Minh Khai) turn into a fairy tale, and the night market on An Hoi Island operates. This is the most beautiful and photogenic time. However, it is in the evening that a huge number of tourists are brought in from Da Nang, so it can be very crowded.

Ideal plan: Arrive around 3-4 PM. Visit 1-2 paid attractions while they are open. Then leisurely stroll through the streets, have dinner at a local cafe, and just as darkness falls, find yourself on the lantern street or the waterfront to see the main magic of Hoi An.

The operating hours of the Old Town area itself are 24/7. We have detailed all the nuances of visiting in our guide: Old Town in Hoi An: how to visit, operating hours and cost
