What beaches are in Negombo and can you swim there?

The beaches in Negombo are considered some of the worst in Sri Lanka for swimming. Although travel agencies often advertise them as ideal, the reality is very different - the ocean water here is murky most of the year due to waves and silt brought by canals and rivers.
Main problems of Negombo beaches:
- Murky water - due to silt and sand, the water is rarely clear
- Pollution - outside the tourist area, beaches are often dirty and not cleaned
- Lack of infrastructure - almost no umbrellas, sunbeds, water activities
- Strong waves - not always safe for swimming
The only relatively clean section of beach is in the tourist area along Lewis Place and Porutota Road. Here the sand is cleaner, but the water remains murky.
The only plus is that the beach is very long (about 3 km) and wide (in some places over 100 meters). If you still plan to swim, it's better to choose hotels with pools, as the ocean waters here are rarely suitable for comfortable swimming.
