Yes, declaration is mandatory if you are importing the equivalent of more than $15,000 in cash and traveler's checks or more than $10,000 in cash only. Export of local currency is limited to 20,000 rupees (about $65). Indian and Pakistani currency is prohibited from import and export. Declaration helps avoid problems upon exit and ensures transparency of operations.
