Some vacationers returning from a package tour to Sri Lanka may say they hardly saw any mosquitoes. But the truth is that there are mosquitoes in Sri Lanka, and that's a fact. Their activity greatly depends on the season and regionβ€”they are most abundant in humid jungles, near rice fields and water bodies, especially after the rainy season. During the dry season on the coast, they may be almost unnoticeable, but it's not wise to let your guard down.

Unfortunately, mosquitoes here are not just a minor nighttime itching nuisance. They can transmit diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, chikungunya virus, and much more. The risk for short-term tourists is not catastrophically high, but it exists, so reasonable prevention is an absolutely necessary rule for any traveler.

Here are a few simple tips for protection:

  • Repellents or ointments. Buy a product with a high concentration of DEET (diethyltoluamide) or picaridin. Use it regularly, especially after swimming, and apply it not only to the skin but also to clothing. Don't be swayed by stories about miraculous eco-friendly repellents based on essential oils: we have tested them many times, they are not very effective.
  • Clothing. In the evenings and during nature excursions, wear light-colored, preferably covered clothing with long sleeves and pants.
  • Accommodation. Choose hotels and guesthouses with mosquito nets on windows and over the bed. Air conditioning also helps, as mosquitoes dislike coolness. Bring a fumigator that plugs into an outlet, and liquids or plates for it. Just don't forget that in Sri Lanka, the outlets are of a different type, so you'll need an adapter.
  • Time of day. Mosquitoes are especially active at dawn and dusk. Be extra cautious during these times.

In the end, of course, you shouldn't cancel your trip because of mosquitoes, but you also shouldn't ignore this aspect. And for everything else you need to know about vacationing in Sri Lanka, read our reliable guide - https://nashaplaneta.net/asia/srilanka/sri-lanka
