Yes, to legally operate a motorbike, you need at least an international driving permit (IDP) category 'A'. This is not a national license of international standard, but a separate document issued in addition to your regular license. The IDP is valid in Sri Lanka under local law, as verified by many tourists and us personally during multiple encounters with police. Without a license, you can be fined 25,000 rupees, and in case of an accident, you will automatically be considered at fault.
