Where is it better to go immediately after arriving at the airport in Sri Lanka, to Negombo or Colombo?

It is impossible to give a definitive answer, as the exact answer depends on what time you arrive, whether you are willing to spend on a taxi and how important saving is to you, and most importantly β on your further plans. Personally, my choice is Colombo. But so that you can make your own decision, here is a comparison:
Reasons in favor of Negombo
- Negombo is closer to the airport than Colombo (only 10 kilometers compared to 30 to Colombo), so you can get there by taxi faster and cheaper.
- You can also get to Negombo by bus quickly and inexpensively. For this, you need to walk a bit from the airport exit to the small bus station Avariwatta (sometimes also written as Aweriwatta), and from there buses run frequently during the day.
- Negombo has a beach, so you can stay here for a day or two for rest and acclimatization before moving on.
- Hotels in Negombo are cheaper than in Colombo, and they are easier to find since everything is compact here.
- Overall, the atmosphere and layout of Negombo are simpler and more understandable than in the big city of Colombo, so if you are coming for the first time, it will be easier to figure things out here.
Reasons in favor of Colombo
- Colombo is the main transport hub of the country, so it will be much easier to find transportation from here to continue your journey further across the country. There is a large bus station and railway station here, from which you can go to any resort and any corner of the country directly without transfers. Doing this from Negombo is more difficult, as the number of routes is very limited and you will have to transfer through Colombo, Kurunegala, etc.
- In Colombo, you can exchange money at the most favorable rate in the country at banks and exchange offices in the central Colombo Fort area.
- If you decide to stay for a day or two in Colombo, you will find many more attractions here than in Negombo.
In general, the choice is yours, but personally I choose Colombo. Just in case, I remind you that we have a detailed guide about Sri Lanka and all the resorts. I advise you to read it before the trip, it has all the detailed instructions on how and what you can get there with prices and schedules, you can start from here and follow the links further - https://nashaplaneta.net/asia/srilanka/sri-lanka
