Taksim Square (Taksim Square or Taksim Meydanı) – this is an important point for a landmark and a small tourist area or quarter in the Beyoglu district, and only then a landmark. At various times, the Square became the center of popular discontent, rallies, and in 1977 there was even a mass shooting of demonstrators. Today everything is quiet here, and it is a place for folk festivals, walks of tourists, a transport hub. Here is the eponymous metro station and funicular, the final stops of bus routes, as well as nearby the place of arrival and departure of buses to airports. A large Taksim mosque is being built nearby. In the center stands the monument of the Republic by Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica, erected in 1928 on the occasion of the formation of the Turkish Republic.
For tourists, the Square as a tourist attraction is not very remarkable, but there are many inexpensive cafes and street fast foods around, sometimes open-air exhibitions of artisans are held, here the movement starts from the final stop the historical red tram along Istiklal Street.

🚶 How to get there
located in the center of Beyoglu tourist area at the beginning Istiklal streets (Taksim Square on the map. You can get here by Metro M2 to Taksim station. From the tourist area Sultanahmet the easiest way to get here is by tram T1 to the final stop of Kabataş and then on foot 15 minutes or by funicular. From the Asian part of Istanbul the easiest way is to take the ferry to Kabataş Pier (see Istanbul ferries).
