Yes, according to the rules, a return ticket (or a ticket to any third country) is required when entering Thailand, and they may ask for it — checks are selective, depending on your luck. So formally, without it, you may not be allowed into the country, but in practice many are let through without questions. However, you shouldn't relax: most often the ticket is asked for at check-in at the departure airport, not in Thailand itself. If it is checked at passport control in Phuket and you don't have a ticket, it could even end in deportation — such cases have happened.

Return tickets are on the list of requirements for obtaining a visa-free stamp. Here's what they usually check for a tourist:

  • A ticket to leave Thailand — back home or to any third country, and обязательно within the permitted stay period. For Russians, this is currently 30 days (since September 15, 2026, the visa-free stay has been reduced from 60 to 30 days).
  • Cash for the duration of the trip — according to consulate recommendations, this is 20,000 baht per person or 40,000 baht per family, and specifically in cash, not on a card.
  • Confirmation of hotel or accommodation booking — may be requested.

There are no requirements for mandatory insurance, tourist voucher, and the like, but it's better not to forget about the ticket and cash. Another mandatory item is the electronic arrival form Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), which must be filled out no earlier than 3 days before entry. We've explained how to do it correctly step by step with screenshots: How to fill out the Thailand immigration card (TDAC).

Attention! Due to the worsening situation on the border with Cambodia, tourist checks upon entry to Thailand have become stricter. Now they look more strictly at the availability of departure tickets, may require you to show cash and accommodation booking. So we advise taking this matter seriously.

The most unpleasant thing is that you'll have to deal with this issue not on the beach in Phuket, but back home, at the check-in counter. Airlines interpret all doubts in their favor: no departure ticket — they may simply deny boarding, and it will be too late to prove anything. That's why it's safer not to rely on luck, but to settle the matter in advance. There are only three options, and all of them work:

  • Buy a real inexpensive ticket to a neighboring country. The most honest way: local low-cost carriers like AirAsia sell cheap tickets during sales. For example, from Phuket it's convenient to fly to Kuala Lumpur or Penang. Such a ticket is real, it will definitely be accepted, and if plans change — you just won't fly.
  • Make a temporary booking on special websites. There are online services where for a small fee of about $10 they make an official ticket booking for the desired date, and it is verified in the systems. This is cheaper than a real ticket and really works, we do it ourselves. But you need to consider that the booking doesn't last long, 3-5 days, sometimes longer, so it's better to buy it not in advance, but on the day before the trip.
  • As a last resort — a land ticket to Laos, Myanmar, or Malaysia, or a ferry to Malaysia from Satun or Koh Lipe. They can be bought on the websites 12go.asia (doesn't accept Russian cards) or Trip.com (Russian cards work). And these tickets are often refundable, so you lose almost nothing.

Lifehack for those who want to stay in Thailand longer than 30 days: buy a ticket not "back home", but to any neighboring country for a date within the visa-free period. Then before flying home, you can calmly extend your stay for another 30 days at the immigration office or do a "visa run". We've covered all the current schemes in the article cases for extending stay in Thailand.

Russian passports just get stamps, and no visa is needed

Separately about cash: money on a card and bank statements are not accepted, you need actual banknotes. If you plan to stay longer than the standard visa-free period, it makes sense to think about a visa in advance — for this, read how to get a tourist visa to Thailand on your own, there's also information about terms and cost.

And remember the main thing: a departure ticket is not a formality, but your insurance against a ruined vacation. Buying a cheap ticket to Malaysia, Vietnam, or Laos is much easier and cheaper than dealing with boarding denials, deportation, and a blacklist. It will also come in handy if you want to do a "visa run" and return to Phuket for a new stamp.
