Where is the Emerald Palace in Bangkok and how to visit it on your own?

The Emerald Palace is not a separate building, but part of the huge complex of the Grand Palace, which is located in the historical center of Bangkok on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, on the Rattanakosin Peninsula. To be precise, the main shrine that everyone goes to is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew), located right on the palace grounds. You can get there on foot from the Khao San or Chinatown areas, by taxi (about 200 baht from the center), by metro to Sanam Chai station (blue MRT line, then 20 minutes on foot), or by river taxi to Tha Chang pier.
To get inside, you need to go through the main gate, then along the alley to the ticket offices (they are not immediately at the entrance). The entrance ticket costs 500 baht (about 1104 rubles at the 2026 exchange rate). This price includes a visit to the palace itself, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the Queen Sirikit Textile Museum, and the Phra Kaew Temple Museum. You can also rent an audio guide in Russian for 100 baht. The ticket offices are open daily from 8:30 to 15:30, and the complex itself is open until 16:30.
Important! There is a strict dress code at the entrance: shoulders and knees must be covered. If you come in shorts or a tank top, a cloak will be provided for free at the entrance with a deposit of 200 baht. Also, large backpacks, food, and drinks are not allowed.
It is best to arrive at opening time, 8:30 AM, before the crowds and heat. By 11 AM, it is already packed with tourist groups. Allow at least 3-4 hours to explore the complex. Photography is allowed on the grounds, but strictly prohibited inside the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. By the way, you can photograph the Emerald Buddha itself (a statue made of solid jadeite, 66 cm high) through the open doors from the street.
Tip: Do not fall for the scams of local tuk-tuk drivers who say that "the palace is closed today" and offer a free tour. This is an old scam β they will just take you to souvenir shops. Ignore them and go straight to the gates.
You can get to the palace in various ways:
- By taxi: via apps like Grab, Maxim, or InDrive. From the center, the ride costs about 200 baht.
- By MRT metro: to Sanam Chai station (blue line), then 20 minutes on foot.
- By river taxi (Express Boat): from Sathorn pier (near BTS Saphan Taksin station) to Tha Chang pier for 16 baht.
- By bus: routes No. 1, 3, 9, 15, 25, 30, 32, 33, 39, 43, 44, 47, 53, 64, 80, 82, 91, 201, 203, 501, 503, 508, 512 (fare from 8 to 36 baht).
