Yes, it is quite possible to get to Lake Ritsa by car, and it is an excellent option for independent travel. The road from Gagra takes about 1.5–2 hours one way, the surface is good asphalt, but be prepared for serpentine roads with sharp turns. The main advantage of traveling independently is that you are not tied to a group and can linger at places you like as long as you want, rather than wasting time on commercial stops at apiaries and markets, as often happens on group excursions.
However, there is an important nuance — parking near the lake itself is problematic. There are prohibitory signs along the embankment and traffic police are constantly on duty, so you cannot leave your car right by the water. You need to drive about 600 meters further, where there is a large paid parking lot. The cost is 200 rubles for the whole day. The parking coordinates are on our map of Abkhazia.
Also, do not forget that the lake is located on the territory of the Ritsa National Park, and at the entrance checkpoint you will need to pay an entry fee: adult ticket — 700 rubles, children 8–12 years old — 200 rubles, under 8 years old — free. The fee is charged per person in the car.
Along the way to the lake, you will encounter many interesting places: Blue Lake, the waterfalls "Maiden's Tears" and "Men's Tears", Yupshar Gorge, and the observation deck "Farewell, Motherland!". All of them are located along the only road, so you can easily plan stops. For convenience, we recommend marking the points in advance on the map of Abkhazia's attractions.
If for some reason you do not want to go by car, there are alternatives: taxi (from 6,000 to 10,000 rubles per trip with waiting) or an individual guided jeep tour — this will be more expensive but more interesting than a standard group tour. However, there is no scheduled bus to Ritsa; public transport does not go there.
