The bus ride from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai takes from 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic and the specific schedule. This is the most popular and inexpensive way to travel between the two northern capitals.
Buses depart from Chiang Mai Bus Station (Arcade Bus Station) approximately every hour from 07:00 to 19:00. There are regular scheduled buses and more comfortable options. Tickets cost from 200 to 300 baht (about $5.5-8.5). Buses arrive at the Old Bus Station in the very center of Chiang Rai, from where it is easy to reach most hotels.
Important: Tickets, especially for morning and evening schedules, are better purchased in advance, at least a day before. During high season or on weekends, seats may be sold out, and you might have to wait for the next bus.
An alternative to the bus is a taxi or private transfer. A taxi ride will cost about 2000 baht, but you will travel faster (about 3 hours) and with maximum comfort directly to the hotel door.
