The distance from the city of Chiang Rai to the center of the Golden Triangle (Sop Ruak village) is about 80 kilometers. Travel time depends on the chosen mode of transport:

  • By rented car or motorcycle: On the good Highway No. 1, the journey will take approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to 1.5 hours without stops.
  • By taxi or private transfer: The time will be comparableβ€”about 1.5 hours. The cost of a taxi one way can be 1000-1500 baht, depending on bargaining skills.
  • By public transport with transfers: This will take significantly more time.
    1. First, you need to travel from Chiang Rai bus station to the city of Chiang Saen by bus (about 1.5 hours).
    2. Then in Chiang Saen, transfer to a songthaew (shared taxi) to Sop Ruak village (another 20-30 minutes).
    3. In total, one way can take 2.5 to 3 hours including waiting for transport.

Therefore, for a day trip from Chiang Rai, it is optimal to rent transport or join a tour. We have detailed all the ways to get there in our article: Golden Triangle in Thailand.
