Where in Langkawi can you go snorkeling?

The best and practically the only organized place for snorkeling with corals in the vicinity of Langkawi is the Pulau Payar Marine Park. This is a protected island located approximately 30 kilometers south of Langkawi.
Day trips are organized there on speedboats, which usually include hotel transfer, lunch, snorkeling equipment (mask, snorkel, fins), and several hours of free time at the coral reefs. The cost of such an excursion starts from 300 Malaysian ringgit (RM) per person.
However, before booking the trip, it is important to know about the drawbacks of this place:
- Long journey: The one-way boat ride takes about an hour, plus organization time β the entire tour will take a whole day (from 9:00 to 17:00).
- Minimal amenities: There is no fresh water on the island (only brought in), showers are very basic, and infrastructure is minimal.
- Many tourists: In high season, the snorkeling platforms can be quite crowded.
- Coral condition: As in many popular places, some of the coral reefs are damaged and do not look bright and fairy-tale-like as in promotional photos.
Alternative: If you are unsure whether it is worth spending a whole day and such money, pay attention to the more affordable and shorter Island Hopping excursion. It includes a visit to the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden (Tasik Dayang Bunting), Eagle Beach, and other locations. Snorkeling will also be there, but usually at sandy shallows, not coral reefs. However, it is cheaper, more fun, and takes only half a day.
Visiting the marine park is only possible as part of a group tour, which can be purchased at any travel agency on the main street of Pantai Cenang or in advance online. We have detailed the pros, cons, and personal experience of visiting Pulau Payar in our guide: Pulau Payar Marine Park.
