Exchanging money at Langkawi Airport (LGK) upon arrival is quite advantageous. The exchange rate at the arrival hall counters is acceptable β€” it is better than at Kuala Lumpur Airport and only slightly worse than at the best exchange points in Kuah town or on Cenang Beach.

At Langkawi Airport:

- Look for the SMJ exchange counter β€” it usually offers one of the best rates.

- Old-series US dollars (issued before 1996) may not be accepted or exchanged at a low rate, so bring new bills.

- In addition to cash, there are Maybank and CIMB ATMs right in the arrival hall. They do not charge a fee on their end for withdrawals with foreign cards (your bank's fee will still apply). UnionPay cards work excellently. This is often the most cost-effective way to obtain local currency.

These ATMs accept UnionPay and have no ATM fee (verified)

On the island:

- The best exchange rate is usually in Kuah Town, especially at exchange counters on the main streets.

- On Pantai Cenang beach, there are also several exchange points with good rates, but they may be slightly less favorable than in Kuah.

Main advice: Do not exchange a large amount at Kuala Lumpur Airport if you are transiting. The rate there is not advantageous. Withdraw from an ATM or exchange a small amount for a taxi, and exchange the main sum already in Langkawi.
