The exchange rate at Langkawi Airport is quite decent, especially compared to Kuala Lumpur Airport. You can safely exchange the first amount for taxi and small expenses here.

In my personal experience, the best rate at the airport is usually offered by the exchange office with the SMJ sign. However, rates may vary between different exchange offices, so it's worth walking around and comparing.

For clarity, here's how the rates looked on one of the days:

  • Kuala Lumpur Airport: dollar — 3.72 ringgit / euro — 4.25 ringgit.
  • Langkawi Airport: dollar — 3.8 ringgit / euro — 4.576 ringgit.
  • Exchange office in Kuah city: dollar — 3.85 ringgit / euro — 4.65 ringgit.

As you can see, the rate at Langkawi Airport is better than at KLIA, but slightly worse than at exchange offices in the city. Therefore, it's more profitable to exchange large amounts already in Kuah or at Pantai Cenang beach.

Important point: Some exchange offices in Langkawi do not accept old-style dollars (small bills, old series) or give a very low rate for them. For exchange, bring new, crisp dollar or euro bills.

Also, at the airport, you can withdraw cash from Maybank or CIMB ATMs. They do not charge a commission on their side; you will only pay your bank's commission. UnionPay cards work.
