No, a visa to Abkhazia is not required for Russian citizens. To enter Abkhazia, Russians only need to have a valid internal (civil) passport of the Russian Federation or a foreign passport. Visa-free stay is allowed for up to 90 days. No additional documents or permits need to be arranged in advance.

However, there are important nuances to know before the trip:

  • For children under 14 years old: from January 19, 2026, leaving Russia with a birth certificate is prohibited. For a trip to Abkhazia, a child will need either their own foreign passport or to be included in a parent's old-style foreign passport (valid for 5 years).
  • For children over 14 years old: entry is possible with an internal Russian passport.
  • Traveling with a child: if the child is traveling with both parents or with one of them, a notarized power of attorney is not required. It is only needed if the child is traveling without parents, for example, with a grandmother or as part of a school group.
  • Stamp in the passport: when crossing the border with a foreign passport, a stamp for entry into Abkhazia is usually not placed (but you can request it). This is important if you plan to visit Georgia in the future, which considers Abkhazia its territory.
