Yes, definitely worth it, if you want to save money and are not afraid of mountain serpentine roads. The bus is the most popular and budget-friendly way to get from Hanoi to Sapa.

Pros of traveling by bus:

  • Price: A ticket costs from 250,000 dong (about 10 dollars), which is several times cheaper than private transfer or train.
  • Convenience of night flights: Many buses depart from Hanoi in the evening (around 21:00-22:00) and arrive in Sapa early in the morning (at 5:00-6:00). You save a day on travel and a night in a hotel.
  • Direct connection: Buses arrive directly in Sapa, while the train only goes to Lao Cai, from where you still need to travel by bus or taxi for about an hour.

What you need to know (cons and nuances):

  • Travel time: 5-6 hours on a very winding mountain road. If you get motion sickness easily, take pills in advance.
  • Type of bus: There are both sleeper (Sleeper) and seated (Seat) buses. For a night trip, of course, a sleeper is better.
  • Cold: In the mountains, it can be cool at night and in the morning even in summer. Don't forget warm clothes in the cabin.
  • Arrival location: Buses often stop on the main street of Sapa or at their offices. From there, it's easy to walk or take a taxi to any hotel.
