There is no direct train to Koh Samui, as it is an island. However, you can purchase a combined ticket (Joint Ticket), which includes train, transfer, and ferry. The total travel time from Bangkok to Samui by this method is approximately 12-15 hours.

The route looks like this:

  1. Overnight train from Bangkok to Surat Thani. Departs in the evening from the main station (Krung Thep Aphiwat or Hua Lamphong). The train takes about 9-11 hours. It's better to get a ticket in a 2nd class sleeper car to get some sleep.
  2. Transfer from Surat Thani railway station to the pier (Don Sak or Raja). Usually included in the cost of the combined ticket. Takes about 1-1.5 hours.
  3. Ferry from the pier to Koh Samui. The ferry takes about 1.5-2 hours.

The entire route can be booked with one ticket on the aggregator 12go.asia, selecting the direction "Bangkok to Koh Samui" and transport type "Train + Ferry". This is convenient as you don't need to separately look for connections.

This option is cheaper than flying but requires time. It's great for budget travelers who don't want to fly. Purchasing a combined ticket online in advance will save you hassle on the spot.
