In Egypt, you can try several interesting exotic fruits that are rarely found in Russia. The most popular local exotics are prickly pear (cactus fruit), loquat, and sugar apple (also known as custard apple or sweetsop). Also, pay attention to guava, kumquat, and cape gooseberry.

  • Prickly pear — these are oblong cactus fruits of yellow or purple color. They are very spiny on the outside, so sellers peel them. The taste is sweet and sour, refreshing, reminiscent of a mix of guava, kiwi, melon, and cucumber.
  • Loquat — a small orange fruit, tasting like a combination of plum, apricot, and cherry at the same time.
  • Sugar apple (custard apple) — a large green bumpy fruit. It should be eaten with a spoon when fully ripe and soft. The flesh is very sweet and aromatic. If you buy a hard one, let it sit for a couple of days.

Besides exotics, in Egypt during the season, there are excellent local mangoes, dates, figs, and pomegranates. However, pineapples, avocados, and coconuts are mostly imported and can be expensive.

Tip: Don't hesitate to ask the seller at the market to let you try the fruit before buying, especially if it's unfamiliar to you. This is a common practice.
