For Vietnam in 2026, it is best to take US dollars (USD) or euros (EUR). Exchanging Russian rubles on-site is extremely unprofitable; they are accepted at very limited exchange points, and the rate will be low.

Why dollars/euros, not rubles:

  • Best rate: The dollar and euro are the most common currencies in Vietnam. They are exchanged everywhere: at airports, banks, jewelry shops, and official exchange points.
  • Universality: For some large purchases (e.g., tours or visa payment upon arrival), you can sometimes pay directly in dollars.
  • Reliability: The dong exchange rate to the dollar/euro is relatively stable, while the ruble rate can be unpredictable, and it may simply not be accepted.

Important rules for handling money in Vietnam:

  • Exchange for dong gradually: Do not exchange the entire amount at once. Take bills of different denominations (50 and 100 USD). Large bills (100 USD) sometimes give a slightly better rate, but you will still receive change in dong.
  • Main currency is cash dong: Despite the development of cashless payments, Vietnam is a cash country. Cash is used to pay at markets, street cafes, for taxis, and motorbike rentals.
  • Cards only as a backup: Bank cards (Visa/Mastercard) are accepted in large supermarkets, shopping centers, and some hotels. But do not rely solely on cards! They may suddenly not work, and in small shops they simply won't be accepted. Always carry a sufficient supply of dong with you.
  • Where to exchange: The best rates are usually at jewelry shops (Gold & Silver shops) in tourist areas and at bank branches (e.g., Vietcombank). At the airport, the rate is slightly worse, but you can exchange a small amount for initial expenses (transfer, water).

Final recommendation: Bring dollars in cash, exchange them for dong as needed, and always have local currency with you for daily expenses. Keep the card as a backup option for large purchases or online hotel bookings.
