✔ Short answer: do I need an IDP?
No, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is not required for renting and driving a vehicle in the Philippines.
And this is not just a concession for tourists. The Philippines is a party to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. According to it, to drive a vehicle it is enough to have a national driver's license from another country that is a party to the convention.

In Bohol, in Tagbilaran, we were simply stopped at an intersection for a random check. At the same time, riding for two weeks in Palawan and a week in Siquijor, we did not see a single traffic police officer. So, as they say, luck of the draw.
Our advice: be prepared for checks in popular tourist areas and on main roads. All documents (license, rental agreement) should be with you.
💰 What is the risk of driving without the required license or category?
Fines in the Philippines are serious. If you are stopped and it turns out that you do not have a license or the required category, be prepared to part with the amount:
- Driving a vehicle without a license or without the appropriate category β fine 3000 Philippine pesos (about 4000 rubles).
In addition to the fine, you will be disqualified from driving. The motorbike may be impounded, and then you will have to pay for its return as well.
