All three tombs—Khai Dinh, Tu Duc, and Minh Mang—are interesting in their own way, and the choice depends on your preferences. If possible, it's better to visit at least two to see the contrast.

  • Khai Dinh Tomb: The most unusual and "European." It's a monumental stone palace-mausoleum with stunning mosaics inside. Compact, requiring 30-40 minutes to explore. Ideal if you have little time or want to see something unique.
  • Tu Duc Tomb: The most poetic and picturesque. It's a vast park complex with pavilions, lakes, and forests, built by the poet-emperor for relaxation during his lifetime. Requires more time for a walk (1-2 hours).
  • Minh Mang Tomb: A classic example of Vietnamese imperial architecture, symmetrical and harmonious. Located in a very beautiful area among hills and lakes. Also quite large, suitable for a leisurely stroll.

In our experience, Khai Dinh Tomb is definitely worth including in your itinerary for the contrast. It's unlike anything else in Hue. And to decide which traditional tomb to choose—Tu Duc or Minh Mang—read our separate guides on them.

We recommend reading our detailed materials on each to make an informed choice: Tu Duc Tomb and Minh Mang Tomb. You can start with the general guide: Khai Dinh Tomb in Hue.
