Coconut Prison (Phu Quoc Prison) is an open-air memorial museum, the former largest prison in Southeast Asia, through which about 32,000 prisoners passed from 1946 to 1975. It is the main historical attraction of Phu Quoc, and it is definitely worth visiting to understand the tragic pages of Vietnam's history.
On the museum grounds, barracks, cells, and torture instruments have been recreated using realistic mannequins, which makes a strong impression. This is a place of memory and mourning, contrasting with the resort serenity of the island.
Practical information for visiting:
- Entrance: Free.
- Opening hours: Daily from 8:30 to 11:30 and from 13:30 to 17:00.
- How to get there: The prison is located in the southern part of the island at 350 Nguyen Van Cu Street. Public transport does not go there. You can get there by taxi (approximately 50,000 β 200,000 dong from tourist areas) or by rented motorbike/car. Also, the visit is included in most sightseeing tours of the island.
The visit will take about 1-1.5 hours. It is an important experience for understanding the country, but be prepared for heavy emotions. Not recommended for visiting with young children.
