The history of Coconut Prison on Phu Quoc begins in 1946, when it was built by French colonizers after invading the island. Initially, the prison covered 40 hectares and was divided into 4 sections.

French period (1946-1954) - until 1954, 14,000 captured soldiers of the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese armies, who fought the colonizers for the country's independence, were held here.

Transition period - after the Geneva Accords of 1954, the French returned the prison and prisoners to the Vietnamese government.

Vietnamese period (1955-1975) - in 1955, the Vietnamese government built another prison, Coconut Tree Prison, near Coconut Prison for political prisoners, covering about 4 hectares with division into 3 zones (for men, women, and the elderly).

Until 1975, the prison was "filled" with prisoners with the support of U.S. troops and government. During this period, torture and abuse were particularly rampant. According to various estimates, another 30 to 40 thousand Vietnamese passed through here, and many of them did not leave alive.

There is no exact information on the number of deaths, as these data were concealed. However, it is known that in 2008, a mass grave with at least 500 prisoner bodies was discovered nearby.
