Is it worth renting a motorbike or car in Hanoi?

We do not recommend renting a motorbike or car in Hanoi for city trips for most tourists. The reason is simple: traffic in the capital of Vietnam is extremely chaotic, dense, and practically does not follow rules. Motorcyclists often ride on sidewalks, in oncoming lanes, do not use turn signals, and pay little attention to other road users.

Motorbike (scooter) rental:

• Price: From 200,000 dong (about 8 dollars) per day. It is easy to find rentals in the old city, especially on Pho Ma May street.
• For whom: Only for experienced and confident drivers who already have extensive driving experience in similar conditions (for example, in other Southeast Asian countries). For beginners or those who are not confident with two-wheeled vehicles, this can be dangerous.
• Alternative: It is much safer and often cheaper to use motorbike taxis (Xe Om) through the Grab app. You pay for the ride, and a local driver takes full responsibility for driving and navigating in traffic.

Car rental:

• Price: Quite high, from 40 dollars per day. You can drive with an international driving permit (IDP) of the Russian type along with your national license.
• Difficulties: In addition to the insane traffic, the city has serious parking problems. This option is more for trips outside Hanoi, not for moving within it.

Conclusion: For exploring Hanoi, it is optimal and safer to travel on foot in the historical center, and for longer distances, use taxis (Grab) or city buses. Renting a vehicle is justified only if you are a very experienced motorcyclist planning a long trip through Vietnam, or want to go by car outside the city.
