Water puppet theater (Múa rối nước) is a unique traditional Vietnamese art form that originated over 1000 years ago in the villages of the Red River Delta. Initially, it was entertainment for peasants who, after working in the rice fields, would stage performances in flooded fields or ponds.

The show is interesting because all the action takes place on the water surface, which serves as the stage. Puppeteers, standing waist-deep in water behind a bamboo curtain, control wooden puppets using long poles and ropes, with the puppets' weight reaching up to 15 kg. The performance is accompanied by live national music, songs, and sound effects created by an orchestra.

At the Thang Long Theater in Hanoi, in over 40 minutes, you will see several scenes from rural life, historical legends (such as about Le Loi and the magic sword), and folk tales. This is a bright, colorful, and absolutely original spectacle that immerses you in the atmosphere of old Vietnam.
