How to get from Colombo to Negombo by train?

You can travel from Colombo to Negombo by suburban train for just 50 rupees. Trains depart from Colombo Fort station about 5-8 times a day, and the journey takes 1-1.5 hours.

These are not long-distance trains, but something like our commuter trains. Tickets are purchased directly at the station at window No. 10 about an hour before departure; they are not sold in advance.

Important nuance: trains are often overcrowded, especially during peak hours, so be prepared to stand. If you want a guaranteed seat, arrive at the station early.

In Negombo, the train stops at several stations:

• Main Negombo Railway Station — from here, you can walk to the city center or take a tuk-tuk for 300 rupees
• Kattuwa — closest to the tourist area, many hotels are within walking distance
• Kochchikade — another convenient station in the city
