You can travel from Colombo to Negombo on bus number 240 for just 100-195 rupees. Buses depart from the main bus station in the Pettah area and take about 1.5-2 hours.

There are two types of buses: regular local for 100 rupees and fast express for 195 rupees. Express buses travel on the highway and arrive faster, they are more comfortable and air-conditioned.

Buses depart at least every 30 minutes, so you can come to the station at any time—you won't have to wait long. Just go to the platform and ask the driver "Negombo?", and they will immediately show you the right bus.
