Lan Ha Bay or Halong in Vietnam — which is better to choose?

Lan Ha Bay and Halong are very similar, but Lan Ha is considered less touristy, while not inferior in beauty. In fact, many Halong cruises include part of Lan Ha Bay, although tourists often don't realize this.

Lan Ha is located south of Halong and washes Cat Ba Island, with the border between the bays passing north of the island. Here, there are also about 300 picturesque islands, caves, lagoons, and floating villages. The key difference is that Lan Ha usually has fewer tourist groups, creating a more secluded atmosphere.

In terms of activities, there is almost no difference: both bays offer kayaking, snorkeling, cave visits, and beaches. However, tour prices in Lan Ha may be slightly lower, especially if booked directly on Cat Ba. Also, note that the famous sailboats from promotional photos in both bays are often photo manipulations; real cruises are conducted on motorboats.
