On Delft Island, there are enough attractions for one day of active sightseeing, mainly historical sites from the colonial era and unique natural places.

Main attractions:

  • Giant baobab - one of the oldest and largest trees in Sri Lanka
  • Dutch fort - extensive ruins from the 17th century made of coral limestone
  • Pigeon nest - a unique tower for postal pigeons on the grounds of the old Dutch hospital
  • Queen's Tower - a solitary limestone tower on the southern shore of the island
  • Herds of wild horses - descendants of horses brought by the Portuguese or Dutch
  • Banyan tree - a fantastic labyrinth of aerial roots
  • Growing Stone - a unique geological anomaly surrounded by legends

All attractions on Delft are free to visit. It is most convenient to explore them with rented transport - a bicycle, motorbike, or with a driver on a tuk-tuk. Distances between objects are significant, and walking them under the scorching sun is difficult.

Particular attention deserves the local coral stone - a unique building material from which all historical objects on the island are built. Its soft, porous texture with fossil inclusions creates a unique architectural landscape.
