BTS (Skytrain) and MRT are the two main types of metro in Bangkok, but they have key differences. BTS is an elevated metro that runs through tourist areas such as Siam, Silom, and Sukhumvit. It consists of the Sukhumvit, Silom, and Golden Line lines, and its stations are often located near shopping malls and hotels.
MRT is an underground metro that is more focused on residential areas and transport hubs, such as Hua Lamphong railway station and Morchit bus terminal. It includes the blue and purple lines, but it is less popular among tourists as fewer attractions are located near its stations.
Tickets for BTS and MRT are not interchangeable: when transferring, you need to buy a new ticket. The fare is similar (from 16 baht), but the fare systems are different. BTS uses cards, while MRT uses tokens or stored-value cards.
The operating hours for both types of metro are roughly the same: from 6:00 to 00:00, but BTS may start earlier (from 05:15). For tourists, BTS is more convenient due to its coverage, while MRT is more useful for trips to train stations and markets.
