Yes, it can get cold in Sri Lanka, and you can really freeze a lot under certain conditions. Contrary to what many think, that Sri Lanka is an exclusively warm country, there are actually places here where you can get quite cold at times, and we have experienced this firsthand, and not just once.

Of course, there is no snow here, and there's no need to bring a down jacket and hat with you. But if you plan to go to the mountainous areas in central Sri Lanka, climb Adam's Peak, or are just coming here during the winter months, then a sweatshirt, pants, and a jacket for protection from wind and rain won't hurt at all. For example, during a night climb to Adam's Peak, you can freeze even in summer. Moreover, we experienced a sharp drop in temperature in the evening after rain even at the beach resort of Trincomalee in October, so we even had to wear pants and sweatshirts for an evening walk. You can also freeze a lot when riding a motorcycle (motorbike) in wet weather. And finally, moderately warm clothing may be needed when traveling in air-conditioned buses, trains, or minivans, since the air conditioners here work very powerfully, and if you ride for a long time, you'll freeze in shorts and a T-shirt.

So don't be careless about clothing in Sri Lanka, especially if you're not going on a beach hotel tour for relaxation, but planning a complex itinerary across the country with visits to mountainous areas.
