Protection from leeches is based on the principle of tightness: you need to cover all exposed areas of skin. To do this, wear high trekking boots with a sewn-in tongue, tight synthetic socks, and tuck your pants into them, securing the edges with elastic bands or tape. Additionally, you can use fabric gaiters or even plastic bags wrapped around your legs.

An alternative method is minimal clothing (for example, flip-flops and rolled-up pants), which allows you to easily notice and shake off leeches before they attach. This method is popular among locals but requires habit and constant body inspection.

If you are camping in a tent, set it up on dry open clearings, fasten all zippers, and use upper mesh for ventilation. To repel leeches, you can lay rags soaked in gasoline or kerosene at the entrance, but avoid strong odors inside the tent. Or choose a hammock with a mosquito net—leeches won't be able to reach you.
