Under Thai law, there is no difference whether you drive a motorbike (scooter) or a car, the punishment is equally strict. There is also no difference whether you are a foreigner or not, you will still be punished, so we strongly advise against taking risks. Especially since foreigners constantly get into accidents on cars and motorbikes, including fatal ones, and some spend time in Thai prison. And these are not isolated cases, there are really many of them. Now I will tell you everything:
The blood alcohol level for punishment is divided into two categories:
- For drivers with a valid driver's license and category, and age over 20 years β this is 0.5 promille.
- For drivers without a license or with a license under the age of 20 β this is 0.2 promille.
For reference, in Russia the norm for everyone is 0.3 promille, which is practically residual effects from yesterday's beer.
For exceeding the limit, the law imposes a fine of 5-20 thousand baht ($150 β $600) and up to one year in prison. If you cause an accident and someone is injured, you could spend several years in a Thai prison, it all depends on the severity.
Of course, you can try to negotiate on the spot and get away with a bribe, but that is also dangerous, you may be punished for that as well, it all depends on the police officer.
