How to get to Bursa

Article and Section Navigation

Bursa is 160 kilometers from Istanbul (Bursa on the map), which is usually the easiest way to get here. There are buses from Istanbul and its airports to Bursa, and you can also get there with a transfer by bus+ferry+bus. From other cities of the country it is best to get by bus, but there is no railway in the city. You can also get to Bursa directly by plane, but international flights do not fly here, you will have to change inside the country.

If you need detailed instructions, how to get to Bursa from Istanbul, see here, and here is more information about all the ways to get to Bursa:

Next to Bursa is Yenisavir Airport (IATA code - YEI, airport on the map). It does not accept international flights, so you can only fly to it with a transfer through other Turkish airports, which in the end will be quite long and expensive. If you still fly to this airport, then you can get from it to the city by taxi from 50 lira, or by city bus number 80.

It is much cheaper to get here through one of the two airports in Istanbul: Istanbul New Airport (Istanbul New Airport, IATA code – IST), or Sabiha Gokcen Airport (Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen, IATA code - SAW). Please note that the old Ataturk Airport no longer accepts passenger flights, its code and all flights have been transferred to the new Istanbul New Airport.

  • Through the airport named after Sabiha Gokcen (Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen).

If you have a choice, it is better to fly to this airport, as it is closer to Bursa, and from it you can get a direct flight by bus (airport on the map. Buses depart from 07:00 to 01:15 every 20-30 minutes according to the schedule, an hour and a half on the way. Schedule and booking tickets here - https://bus.burulas.com.tr/en but only Turkish citizens can book tickets. The fare is 220 liras (4.7 USD), children 6-12 years old-30 lira, children under 5 years old can go free of charge in the hands of their parents. But for children of foreign citizens there are no discounts, and from the age of 6 you will have to pay the full cost. To board this bus, leave the arrivals hall through the main exit, cross the road and there you will see the airport bus station. Tickets are sold at a yellow kiosk with the inscription and logo of BBBUS | BURSA for cash or a plastic card. To purchase, you need to present your passport.

Buses arrive at the bus station (otogar) 10 kilometers from the city (bus station on the map). From there, the city center can be reached by buses №№ 38, 93, 94, 96. travel is paid for with a contactless one-time card or Bursakart pass, which can be purchased immediately (for more information, see the section about Bursa Transport, what to use). A taxi from the bus station to the city center will cost from 40 lira (0.85 USD, see Turkish currency and exchange rate).

  • Via Istanbul New Airport

This airport is much further away, almost 200 kilometers from Bursa, but even from there it will not be difficult to get there (airport on the map). Some guidebooks and advise to go on the route bus-ferry+bus, but in fact this is not a very convenient and outdated way to get there. It is much easier to buy a ready-made ticket from their new airport with a transfer through Sabiha Gokcen airport. The entire journey will take a little more than 3 hours, depending on the situation on the roads. The fare is 75 liras (1.6 USD), children 6-12 years-52 lira, children under 5 years can go for free in the hands of their parents. Buses leave from 05:54 to 23:45 every hour. You can book ready-made tickets with transfers or separately between airports and Bursa here - https://bus.burulas.com.tr/en. In the search form on this website, The New Istanbul airport is listed in Turkish-Yeni Istanbul Havalimani.

As in the previous version, buses arrive at the bus station 10 kilometers from the city.

Another option is to go on your own through Istanbul. To do this, you will first need to get from the airport to the Istanbul bus station (see how to get to Istanbul), and then change to the bus to Bursa (see below about buses). This method is a little cheaper, but in time it can be much longer.

By bus

Bus to Bursa
Bus to Bursa

Bursa can be reached by bus from any major city in Turkey, and from smaller towns and resorts with transfers through larger cities. Intercity buses are mostly large and comfortable, run often.

There is no single state carrier in Turkey, services are provided by many different companies with their own schedule. Ideally, the schedule should be specified on the spot in the city from where you plan to leave, but the schedules for the main directions can be checked here – https://www.tikobilet.com/otobus-bileti/bursa. The site is in Turkish, but it is possible and even possible to book a ticket online. There is no need to buy tickets in advance, unless you are traveling during major national holidays. Here are the main directions and cost for reference:

Direction Periodicity Cost (in lira) Travel time
Istanbul 3-4 hours 40-60 around the clock, very often during the day
Ankara 5-6 hours 50-75 around the clock, in the afternoon every 30 minutes
Izmir 5-6 hours 50-62 around the clock, in the afternoon every 30-60 minutes
Antalya 8-9 hours 85-100 12 flights per day

All buses arrive and depart from Intercity bus terminal or Otogar bus station 10 kilometers from the city (bus station on the map). This is a huge terminal with a cafe, currency exchange, a lot of ticket offices for selling tickets in different directions of different companies.

From the bus station to the hotel in the city can be reached by taxi for 40 lira, or by city buses No. 38, 93, 94, 96 for 2.4 lira. The most suitable for tourists are No. 38 and 96 (see Route # 38 on the map, Route # 96 on the map), since they go directly to the central tourist area of Osmangazi. But keep in mind that Route 38 splits into several more sub-routes, each of which also goes to Osmangazi, but some strongly detour. The fastest are 38, 38/D, 38/G, and 38/D-2 does not go to the district at all. In order not to make a mistake with the choice of mrashrut, it is better to decide in advance on the most suitable route maps, which can be viewed here - https://www.burulas.com.tr. To do this, select the desired route from the list on the site, or enter a number in the search box, and click on the map icon next to it. There you can also see the schedule and fare.

City buses to the city center depart from here from the final bus station of city buses, which is on the right 200 meters from the exit of their bus station. To pay for the trip, you need to buy a Bukart credit card for 7 lira, replenish it, and when entering the bus to pay, touch the reader. The card is sold and replenished in automatic terminals at the bus station of city buses, or in a small shop to the right of the exit from the bus station. Terminals accept only cash, change is credited to the card account. See more about Bukart map here.

Minibuses with the inscription HEYKEL also run from the bus station to the Central Osmangazi district to the stop near the main mosque Ulu Camii (Ulu Jami).

By ferry

Bursa ferry
Bursa ferry

You can get to Bursa by ferry from Istanbul, and this is a good alternative to the bus, since they bypass traffic jams, besides they are even cheaper than bus travel. But you still have to use the bus to get from the pier to Bursa. Keep in mind that different ferries come/go to different marinas in Bursa.

Ferries go one and a half to two hours, but the whole route will take about three. Also keep in mind that in bad weather, flights are canceled, which can be found on the carriers ' websites (see below).

Some guidebooks on the Internet write that you can quickly get from Istanbul airport by ferry, but now this information is already outdated, since the Old Airport is im. Ataturk, from where it was convenient to go by ferry, no longer functions.

Also be aware that the old guidebooks mention the BUDA ferry route from Beyoglu district from kabatas pier to Bursa. But now these ferries are not on the BUDA schedule.

So, there are at least two options to sail by ferry from the center of Istanbul. Which one to choose depends on which Marina is easier for you to reach from your location in the city.

  • From Eminonu/Sirkeci jetty in Istanbul

Eminonu / Sirkeci pier is located in tourist Sultanahmet district near Galata Bridge (Marina on the map. It can be reached by tram line T1, by the Marmaray city train to Sirkeci station from the Asian part of the city, or by buses (see read more about Istanbul city transport here).

BUDA ferries run from here to BUDA Marina in Mudanya (Mudanya, Pier on the map). They are sent 5-8 times a day according to the schedule, which can be specified on the carrier's website - https://budo.burulas.com.tr/. Tickets are also available there. The fare is 40 liras, children and students 33, children under 6 years old without a separate seat-free of charge.

  • From Yenikapi jetty in Istanbul

Yenikapi Ferry Terminal is also centrally located near the tourist area of Sultanahmet (Marina on the map. It can be reached by Metro lines M1A, M1B, M2, buses.

From this pier there are IDO ferries to guzelyalı pier in Mudanya (Mudanya Marina on the map. They are sent up to 8 times a day according to the schedule available on the carrier's website - https://www.ido.com.tr/. Cost from 29 to 40 liras depending on the day of the week and time of departure, children discounts, up to 6 years free of charge. Unfortunately, it is not possible to buy tickets for non-Turkish citizens on the site, since the purchase requires entering TCKN, which is assigned only to residents of the country. But in principle, buying a ticket at the pier before sailing is not difficult.

Upon arrival at any of the marinas in Mudanya, Bursa can be reached by taxi, city buses, or minibuses (see Bursa Transport, what to use). City buses 1/M, F/1, F / 3 pass by both marinas, but from Guzelyalı you will have to walk 1 kilometer to the main road. 1/GY and F/2 are shipped directly from Guzelyalı. Only buses F/3 and F/2 go directly to the tourist center of Bursa, and the rest will have to change by Metro at Emek station or by other transport. To pay for buses and Metro, you will need to buy a BursaKart transport card at the vending machine, which is available on both Piers.

And here are the bus routes on the map for reference:

By train

So far, there is no railway in Bursa, but its construction is underway to launch a high-speed train.
