Can you swim in Lake Ritsa in Abkhazia?

No, swimming in Lake Ritsa is officially prohibited, and even if you really want to, it will be almost impossible. The water in the lake is icy all year round — even in the height of summer the temperature does not rise above +17 °C, and on average stays around +10 °C. The lake is located at an altitude of 950 meters, fed by mountain rivers and snowfields, so it simply does not have time to warm up.
In addition, Lake Ritsa is located on the territory of the Ritsa National Park, which is a protected area. The park administration officially prohibits swimming, and they enforce this. So do not plan a trip with the idea of swimming — it is better to aim for the beautiful views, walks along the embankment, and catamaran rides.
Instead of swimming in the lake, you can rent a catamaran (from 500 rubles per person for half an hour) or just take a walk along the embankment, enjoying the mountain air and turquoise water. If you go further from the main pier, you can bargain and get a catamaran cheaper.
If you want to swim in Abkhazia, it is better to go to the sea — to Gagra, Pitsunda, or Sukhum. And to Ritsa, you should go for completely different impressions: here you can see Stalin's dacha, the waterfalls Bird's Beak and Milk, and also go to the less known but no less beautiful Lake Malaya Ritsa.
The best time to visit is from May to October. In peak season (July–August) it is crowded, and the water in the lake may be murky. In spring and autumn there are fewer tourists, but rain is possible. In winter, roads to the lake are sometimes closed due to snowfall, although the lake itself almost never freezes.
